The mosaic is the largest of its kind found in London for more than 50 years and it is thought to have been the floor of a Roman dining room.
Archaeologists say ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ finds near London Bridge and the Shard are from heyday of Londinium.
Dr David Neal who is the former archaeologist with English Heritage and leading expert in Roman mosaic, has attributed the design to the “Acanthus group” of mosaicists.
The site under construction is being redeveloped as The Liberty of Southwark, a complex of offices, homes and shops.
